May - Natasha Vincent

Q: How did you find Karen?
Natasha: Via one of my regular online searches for a Canadian locs stylist. It helped that Karen's portfolio gallery was full of great before/after pictures and that one of her clients happened to be an acquaintance of mine!

Q: How long have you been her client?
Natasha: A smidgen over a year.

Q: Most memorable stylist/client moment?
Natasha: Err, it's a tie between "The Big Burrito Mix Up" and hearing her practice Icelandic.

Q: Any particular favorite style/color Karen has done for you?
Natasha: She's all up in my dreads, cutting 'n styling them in wicked ways that stay fashionable and get compliments even when I'm dressed like a complete slob.

Q: What kind of work do you do?

Natasha: Why, I'm a spa and salon advisor. So I suppose that means I know what I'm talking about when I say Karen's great at what she does, no?

Q: Any favorite quote, or final thoughts?
Natasha: Is this where I'm supposed to add something trite? Err, don't worry be happy. Does that qualify? If not, it's not far off from what I'd actually say which is: Live life with optimistic enthusiasm and peaceful enjoyment. My goodness, it's exactly the same thing...just with big dictionary words!

Natasha also has a website called My Dreadlocks. with an E newsletter and lots of advice for fellow dread heads!

April - Colleen Hewlett

Q: How did you find Karen?
Colleen: I had my dreads (or what I was trying to call dreads after months of neglect) when I met Karen. A friend of mine heard about her, and so I just drove down to Toronto and made an appointment with her. And if you have seen the pictures you would be amazed at the transformation my dreads took in the matter of 4 hours.

Q: How long have you been her client?
Colleen: I have known Karen now for I believe 4 years. I have been an avid client every 3-5 months for maintenance and always some new added colour to the dreads. You need new hair for the new season, and I had some good ones!

Q: Most memorable stylist/client moment?
Colleen: There has been so many, it is hard to pick just one. My boyfriend also has attended most visits with me(he sits and waits for me, I think it's crazy too.) I enjoyed the time when we decided to do the Fire theme and the next visit was the Water theme. The hair has to be bright and big or its just not fun. I also enjoyed when she first got her new loft, and the whole place was under construction. She totally had the chair and mirrow set up and of course I came out looking fabulous as she always makes me.

Q: Any particular favourite style/colour Karen has done for you?
Colleen: I enjoyed the water theme with all the blues and greens. It was all wavy too which added a lot of volume to my hair! Also I had what I called the "old lady hair colours" of light purple/silver. Add a touch of hot pink in the front, and you are having people question if you dye them all seperatly?!

Q: What kind of work do you do?
Colleen: I work straight midnights at an automotive factory north of Toronto. I make Car Recliners for every brand of vehicle, which means blue collar and very physically exhausting (especially on midnights). I started working there when I already had my dreads, and through all the colour changes I am still there, have moved up in production, and everyone either knows me or call me "the one with the crazy dreads".

Q: Any favourite quote, or final thoughts?
Colleen: If you have any doubt in your mind about either not having dreads or getting some up keep done, please don't think about it.....just go to Karen! She will save your hair and make you proud to show off and stand out.

January - Candice Moar

Q: How did you find Karen?
I found Karen (thank god) through a friend that also has her locs loved by Karen.

Q: How long have you been her client?
I have been a client since June 2007.

Q: Most memorable stylist/client moment?
The visit that is most memorable to me, was..... today! January 3rd, 2008. I AM HER CLIENT OF THE MONTH!!!!YEAHHHH! What an honor!!!

Q: What kind of work do you do?
I am the Store Manager at Jean Machine...see people that have locs can still be professionals!!! lol

Q: Additional comments?
Prior to linking up with Karen I was going somewhere else to get my locs loved, but after a year I just wasn't getting the results I was looking for. In a mere 7 months Karen has given me those results and more. Karen is simply amazing at what she does and and has THE BEST personality. I actually like giving her my money! Honestly speaking...if you want dreads...you have dreads, and they don't look so hot...find Karen and wait the two months it might take you to get an appointment and GO! She's the best there is!!!!!!

December - Lorraine Coughlan

Q: How did you find Karen?
My sister found Karen for me, she was surfing the net and came across a
link to her website and called me with the info on how to get a hold of her.

Q: How long have you been her client?
I was fairly new with my dreadlocs and was looking for someone to maintain
them for me and I found Karen, that was a very happy hair day for me.

That was four years ago and I have followed her everywhere she goes, I
see Karen every three months or so to have my dreadlocs felted and
groomed.

Q: Most memorable stylist/client moment?
We have had many a memorable moment in the four years I have
known her but the one that stands out for me is when she took the time
out of her very busy schedule to come to my highschool and do a dreadloc
and hair extention demonstration for my students..... She was a hit and
the students had a great class!

Q: What kind of work do you do?
I am a high school teacher, I teach high risk, marginalized high school students. My subject is Cosmetology.

Q: Additional comments?
I always have people ask me where I get my hair done, that is a huge compliment to her work. If I do say so my locs are the bomb!!!!!

November - Kevin Etherington

Q: How did you find Karen?
Kevin: Around the time I was thinking about getting dreads, I had mentioned that I wanted them to my friends Chris and Erin. They both spoke very highly of Karen, Erin had just recently worked with Karen for a short period of time, and it is safe to say I was defiantly pointed in the right direction!

Q: How long have you been her client?
Kevin: I have been a client of Karens for about 4 years now.

Q: Most memorable stylist/client moment?
Kevin: There are too many to recall or type out, but on my most recent visit to Karen we had a great time listening to Peter & the Wolf. Hearing the cracking and the hissing of a record through an iPod stereo is great! Karen is such an amazing person. Even during your first visit you feel like you have known her for years, such a great conversationalist!

Q: Any particular favourite style/colour Karen has done for you?
Kevin: I love my dreads. Getting them done (and having them done by Karen) was the best decision I have ever made.

Q: What kind of work do you do?
Kevin: I work in the Catalogue department at the head office for HMV Canada. I help to maintain the database for the stores across the country.

October - Nadia Q

Q: How did you find Karen?
I find her to be both lovely and witty...
Greatness will call to greatness, and it was a vague
reference from a lady (also quite a lovely lass) that
lead me through the doors of a salon past and into
the able hands of The Hairy Godmother.

Q: How long have you been her client?
Our allince has seen past fifty cycles of the moons.

Q: Most memorable stylist/client moment?
The spontanious brainstorming of an April afternoon,
that was to become our journey down the rabbit hole.

Q: Any particular favourite style/colour Karen has done for you?
The Golden Griffin updo with feathers
A beautiful creation it was, so much so that the
feathers have made several appearances since

Q: What kind of work do you do?
Ah yes, the toils imposed by an uninspired and
lethargic hand. But fear not, for I have a dream. A
dream that is tantilizingly close to fruition...and I
thank the gods for my Hairy Godmother. Im not sure
why, but everything seems easier when you know you
look good.

You are the greatest *applause 4 Hairy Godmother*
