No matter what, dreads get messy. Most dreads
require some kind of DM (dread maintenance) or re-wrap. These names
are often used interchangeably.
For "do it yourself" maintenance
techniques see Homecare.
For those of you who prefer a little professional
TLC, Knot Just Dreads is just the place. Some clients swear by their routine 6-month check-up.
Some prefer a little more maintenance while others not so much.
It's all up to the individual.Just as a crochet hook is used to
create locs, it can also be used to weave back in all those annoying
little hairs, loops, bumps, wiggles and just about any unaesthetic
dread wonkiness that might bother you. This technique can be referred
to as felting.
In addition to felting your locs, what makes
this maintenance technique full proof is the magic of the string.
Hairpolice
understand the importance of string and so do our clients! If you
didn't already know, your head sheds up to 150 hairs every single
day. The string helps to catch all that shed hair and in doing so
creates a tangle of loose hair at the root of each dread. Often
you hear about people securing small elastics at the root. This
is done for primarily the same reason. The only difference is elastics
are more visible and are prone to deteriorate within a short period
of time.
In fact the string is so durable and so small
that sometimes it can get engulfed between all the shed hair and
the dread making it virtually undetectable.
After a few months, the strings are popped
off with a stitch ripper. This is often done as part of a regular
maintenance appointment.
