Dreadlocks are often but not always a combination of backcombing, twisting, wrapping and waxing sections of hair to form what is amusingly known as an organized mess. This can work, has worked and does work however in conjunction with a few modifications to these techniques, the results are that much better.
Remember that there are no right or wrong ways to loc hair.

Knot Just Dreads offers two types of locking techniques. One uses permanent solution (Dreadperm) and the other does not (Felting or Crochet Dreads). The vast majority may prefer dreadlocks without the use of chemicals but neither method is superior to the other.

Felting (or Crocheting)
It's no secret that locking hair with a crochet hook is thorough, instant and chemical-free. We probably aren't the first nor the only people in the world favouring this technique and we certainly won't be the last.

Felting or weaving the hair into a loc is the best way to keep your length AND prevent new dread puffiness. All hair textures longer than 2 inches can be dreaded this way. A non-petroleum based wax (Knotty Boy brand is top of the recommended list) is used to seal and protect the dreads, not to form them.

Afterwards a string is tied at the base of each dread which keeps them neatly sectioned and encourages natural matting at the root. It's like training wheels for your re-growth!

Dreadperms

This is another way to get dreads started. Like all techniques it has its advantages and disadvantages. Each section of hair is backcombed, twisted and wrapped onto perm rods to ensure even distribution of the perm solution. When perm solution is applied to hair, it causes the hair to swell losing all memory of its original shape. Unfortunately you can't actually see the hair swell. If you could, it'd be pretty hilarious. When the neutralizer is applied it shrinks the hair back down to its original size taking on its new shape- in this case dramatic curly dreadlocks.

The most common complaint with a dreadperm is obviously the use of chemicals. And the smell. The smell will go away in a couple of days. No one likes the smell of a perm. The chemicals are not much stronger than using hair colour. Some people justify a dreadperm by recognizing that dreadlocks damage the hair regardless of the technique.
